Hilltoppers run rule St. Mary's in series opener, 11-1

AUSTIN – St. Edward's opened the series against St. Mary's with an 11-1 victory Friday at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers ended the game in the seventh inning due to the Lone Star Conference run rule.

JACK GRANACK (1-1) pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing only an unearned run to pick up the win. He was backed up by 11 consecutive runs to close out the game.

The Rattlers (6-5, 6-5 LSC) opened the scoring in the second inning with a run on Andrew Perez's groundout.

St. Edward's (4-7, 4-7 LSC) answered with the tying run in the bottom of the third, as MORGAN ALLEN drove in ZANE PHELPS with a grounder to third base.

The Hilltoppers took the lead in the fourth on TYLER DEAN's single to center field. After BLAKE HOLUB crossed the plate, DANTE GUTIERREZ came across once the ball was misplayed in the outfield.

SEU took full control in the sixth inning, scoring five times. The 'Toppers loaded the bases before Dean was hit by a pitch, pushing Holub across the plate. Phelps then cleared the bases with a double and later scored on HUNTER TORREZ's sacrifice fly.

St. Edward's ended the game with three runs in the following frame.

After DYLAN MACKIN scored on a throwing error, Dean drove in Holub on a groundout. WESLEY POWELL then scored on a wild pitch that caused the game to cease due to the league's 10-run rule.

The lower half of the order did most of the damage for the Hilltoppers. Phelps was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Dean had a hit and drove in three. Torrez and MORGAN ALLEN each also drove in a run.

St. Mary's starter Anthony Chavez (1-2) suffered the loss, as the lefty yielded eight runs (four earned) over five-plus innings.

The two teams will continue the series Saturday with a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
