AUSTIN – St. Edward's clinched the series against St. Mary's Saturday at Lucian-Hamilton Field with a doubleheader sweep. The Hilltoppers won the first game 3-0 and then rallied to win the nightcap in walk-off fashion, 8-7.
GAME ONE RECAP
JACOB VASQUEZ hit a two-run homer in the third inning to put SEU on top early.
The Hilltoppers added another run in the sixth, as
ZANE PHELPS drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Vasquez then took the mound in the seventh and struck out the side to pick up his first save of the season.
BLAKE HOLUB (2-2) hurled 5.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win. The right-hander gave up three hits and walked four. He also struck out four.
NICOLAS DAVIS came on in relief of Holub with two outs in the sixth and recorded a strikeout of the only batter he faced.
GAME TWO RECAP
St. Edward's built a 4-0 lead through the first two innings, fueled by
HUNTER TORREZ's three-run round-tripper in the second.
The Rattlers picked up two runs in the top of the third, but SEU answered the following stanza with a run on
MORGAN ALLEN's single.
St. Mary's took the lead in the sixth with four runs and added another in the seventh to take a 7-5 advantage.
Vasquez led off the seventh with a homer that trimmed the lead to one.
DYLAN MACKIN then drew a walk, but was erased after Holub hit into a fielder's choice. Zairan Forde came on to pinch run for Holub and immediately stole second base. With two outs, Forde also stole third before he scored on
TY MARKEE's single through the left side of the infield.
TYLER DEAN followed with a single through the other side of the infield, pushing Markee around to third base.
On the first pitch to Phelps, he hit a bouncer to the third baseman. However, he looked to throw for the force at second base, but no one was covering and then threw to first, but pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Markee to score the winning run.
UP NEXT
The two teams will close out the series Sunday with a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
