KINGSVILLE – St. Edward's split a doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field. The Javelinas rallied with two runs in the seventh to win the opener, 3-2, but the Hilltoppers claimed the nightcap, 8-3.
GAME ONE RECAP
Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-7, 10-7 LSC) scored a run in the opening frame and held the lead until the seventh inning.
St. Edward's picked up two runs in the seventh on
ZANE PHELPS' triple that gave them a 2-1 advantage.
However, in the bottom of the frame, the Javelinas received a two-run single from Steven Bonuz that ended the game and SEU's seven-game winning streak.
GAME TWO RECAP
NATHAN MEDRANO pitched six strong innings, allowing only one hit and an unearned run to lead St. Edward's to a five-run win. The right-hander struck out seven to improve to 2-0 on the year.
He was backed up by five runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth, giving him a seven-run cushion before handing the ball over to the bullpen.
JACOB VASQUEZ had two of the Hilltoppers' seven hits in the game, including a homer. He also drove in three runs.
DANTE GUTIERREZ was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
UP NEXT
St. Edward's will look to clinch the series Sunday in the finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
