Hilltoppers outlasted by No. 13 West Texas A&M in series opener

CANYON – No. 13 West Texas A&M walked off with a 4-3 win in 11 innings over St. Edward's in the opening game of a three-game series Friday at Wilder Field.

The Buffaloes (3-1, 3-1 LSC) loaded the bases in the final frame before Tanner Schuetz drew a four-pitch walk which allowed Luke Hughes to cross the plate with the winning run.

The Hilltoppers (1-3, 1-3 LSC) trailed 2-0 before picking up a run in the fifth on an error by West Texas A&M. SEU tied the game in the eighth, as TYLER DEAN drew a walk with the bases loaded, pushing HUNTER TORREZ across the dish.

St. Edward's took a 3-2 lead in the ninth, as NOLAN BURR scored on a squeeze bunt off Torrez's bat.

The Buffs loaded the bases in the bottom half of the panel before a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score, forcing extra frames.

Both teams finished with nine hits on the day. MORGAN ALLEN paced the 'Toppers with a pair of singles, while Burr scored twice.

BRADY PUTNIK (0-1) was handed the loss, as the freshman left-hander allowed one run on two hits and two walks in the final inning.

Chandler Dean (1-0) picked up the win in relief. The righty tossed three scoreless stanzas and struck out three.

The series will continue Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
