Hilltopper comeback falls just short in loss to #21 UT Tyler

AUSTIN – St. Edward's baseball scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the winning run at the plate but were not able to convert, falling 13-12 to UT Tyler Saturday.

A two-run homerun in the second inning got UTT on the board, but starting pitcher JACK GRANACK regrouped and was able to close out the inning without further harm. SEU responded and loaded the bases before pushing across four runs to lead through two.

The Hilltoppers added two more runs in the bottom of the third to lead 6-3 and UT Tyler seemed poised to get at least one back with a long fly ball to right field with a runner on third, but DYLAN MACKIN had other plans with a laser from the fence to CULLEN AINSWORTH at the plate for the inning ending double play.

The Patriots clawed back within one, 6-5, with a two-run shot to right field once again in the sixth, but SEU again answered with one run of their own on a wild pitch to extend the lead back to two, 7-5.

UTT added one run in the seventh before a bases clearing grand slam with one out in the eighth to take the lead for the first time since the early innings, 10-7. The Hilltoppers posted two in the eighth before the Patriots added three more in the ninth, seemingly securing the win comfortably.

St. Edward's had other plans as pinch hitters came up big to keep the comeback going. DAVIS DREWEK drew a leadoff walk and BLAKE HOLUB's check-swing infield grounder was misplayed to put runners on first and second with one out. RYAN FEDDERSEN singled down the left field line, scoring Drewek and putting runners at second and third down three, 13-10.

ZARIAN FORDE's deep fly to center allowed Reyna to score and brought up TRENT ROSENAUER with two outs as the tying run. Rosenauer delivered, singling to bring home pinch runner WESLEY POWELL. Rosenauer stole second to move into scoring position but the Hilltopper's magic stopped there as UTT was able to secure the final out.

DYLAN MACKIN had a huge day at the plate, going 4-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Rosenauer ended the day going 3-5 with three RBI and one run scored.

Granack received a no-decision in a solid start, going five innings with seven strikeouts. JAYSON FLORES suffered the loss.

St. Edward's drops to 3-2 on the season and close the series against UTT on Sunday at 1 pm.
