Hilltoppers secure postseason bid with split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUSTIN – Big offensive innings led to a win for St. Edward's baseball to secure a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. SEU dropped the first game 10-9 to UT Permian Basin but were able to win game two 13-5 to lock up the final spot.

GAME 1: SEU 10 – UTPB 9

St. Edward's started well with three runs in the opening frame thanks in large part to a two-RBI double from CHASE COS to right center.

UTPB took one inning to get rolling but, when they did, they unloaded for five runs in the second inning and added one in the seventh.

The lead held up until SEU felt their backs against the wall in the ninth and posted six runs to take the lead for the first time since the early innings. Singles, walks and hit batters allowed St. Edward's to chip away. CULLEN AINSWORTH's single through the left side brought home JAKE HAHN and TYLER DEAN for the lead.

MORGAN ALLEN secured a walk to bring another run home and WESLEY POWELL scored on a wild pitch to put the Hilltoppers up 9-6.

The Falcons were not phased by the deficit and quickly got back to work, scoring four runs to steal the win.

A.G. Ayala suffered the loss after entering to close the game. MATTHEW GILES was strong at the plate, going 3-6 with two runs scored.

GAME 2: SEU 13 – UTPB 5

With fire in their gut from game one slipping from their grasp, St. Edward's took the field offensively with gusto and exploded for four runs in the first.

UTPB responded with one and give up one more to the Hilltoppers in the third before adding two back.

As the game rolled into the fifth, SEU led 5-3 and built on the lead with a four run fifth. The Falcons contributed two in the sixth before the Hilltoppers added insurance runs and then some with four in the eighth to arrive at the final.

MORGAN ALLEN led the way at the plate, going 4-6 with two runs and one triple, while Cos had another strong outing, going 3-6 with three RBIs, a double and three runs scored.

The Hilltoppers improve to 14-20 on the year and 12-18 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on Saturday to close the series against UTPB. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
