The Lone Star Conference released its 2022 Women's Soccer Championship seven-team bracket following the conclusion of the regular season. St. Edward's enters the tournament as the sixth seed and will face third-set West Texas A&M on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 4:00 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
St. Edward's wrapped up its season with a 2-0 victory over Texas Woman's University to finish with a 9-5-4 record, including 5-4-3 in conference play.
The Hilltoppers opened the season on fire, reeling off an 8-1-1 record with four consecutive conference wins through September. However, when the calendar turned, so did St. Edward's fortunes, opening October on a four-game scoreless streak and posting a 1-4-3 record over its last eight contests.
West Texas A&M posted a 12-2-4 record, including 6-2-4 in conference play. The Lady Buffs moved up to No. 14 in the national rankings and are ranked second in the region. However, West Texas A&M did end the year on a down note, getting upset 3-1 by Texas A&M International.
St. Edward's and West Texas A&M offer an interesting contrast between the Hilltoppers' balanced attack against the Lady Buffs' dynamic duo of Maria-Frances Serrant and Asha James. Serrant ranks sixth in the nation with 16 goals, while James has 11 goals. St. Edward's top two scorers are reserves TRISTYN CABELLO (six goals, two assists) and JULIA SPIELMANN (five goals, one assist). KATIE GAY also generated five goals, with 11 Hilltoppers scoring at least once and six scoring two goals.
West Texas A&M also has the stingiest defense in the conference, boasting a .438 goals-against average, anchored by goalkeeper Reagan Heelan, whose .905 save percentage is first in the conference and fifth in the nation.
The two teams faced off on Oct. 12, with St. Edward's falling 1-0 in a tightly contested game. St. Edward's defensive back line did a phenomenal job stopping Serrant and James in open space, poking the ball free, or delivering a well-executed slide tackle to disrupt their runs. Still, the duo was able to connect on a quick-hitter out of a throw-in at the 21-minute mark.
