AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team defeated UT Permian Basin in game one of their four-game series 10-2 Friday afternoon.
SEU scored the first runs of the game in the first inning on a Cullen Ainsworth two-run triple. The Falcons tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, the Hilltoppers took back the lead going up 3-2 after Jake Hahn drove in a run.
In the bottom of the third, Turner Olsen drove in a run on an RBI single up the middle to extend SEU's lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Hilltoppers drove home four runs to give them a commanding 8-2 lead. Stacey Bailey got things started with a two-run double down the line, and Davis Drewek doubled home Bailey and scored on a wild pitch to cap off the inning.
Cullen Ainsworth doubled home two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 10-2, heading into the ninth inning.
Starting pitcher Wesley Gafford picked up the win pitching seven innings, giving up just two runs, and striking out 12 batters in the win.
SEU is back in action tomorrow for a double-header against UTPB tomorrow. First pitch for game one is set for noon, and first pitch for game two is set for 3 pm.
