Hilltoppers split double-header Sunday against Patriots

February 27, 2022

TYLER, Texas - On Sunday, the St. Edward's baseball team split their two games against UT Tyler, losing 5-4 in game one and winning 8-7 in game two.

Game One: UTT 5, SEU 4

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Patriots scored the first run of the game in the fourth on an RBI double. Later in the inning, an RBI single brought their lead to 2-0 over the Hilltoppers.

The Hilltoppers would not go away quietly, though, as a solo home run by Morgan Allen cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. However, the Patriots would answer with a two-run homer later in the inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

In the sixth, the Hilltoppers answered with a two-run homer of their own as Josh Graham cut the deficit to 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh, Josh Graham once again came through for the Hilltoppers to tie the game at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly.

However, the Hilltoppers comeback would fall short as a walk-off home run in the eighth by UT Tyler gave the Patriots the win.

Starting pitcher Luke Short struck out five and gave up four runs through six innings of work. Jayson Flores pitched an inning and two-thirds giving up two hits and a run in the loss.

Game Two: SEU 8, UTT 7

After four scoreless innings to start game two, the bats woke up for both offenses in the fifth inning.

SEU got things started with a two-run double by Morgan Allen. A couple of batters later, Hunter Conner singled to right field to drive home a run to extend SEU's lead to 3-0.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots put up three runs off of a single and a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.

In the sixth, Eric Worden smacked a two-run double to left-center to break the tie and give the Hilltoppers a 5-3 lead. However, a four-run inning by the Patriots gave them the two-run advantage heading into the seventh and final inning.

This time SEU's comeback would not fall short as an RBI double by Hunter Conner and an RBI single by Davis Drewek tied the game up at 7-7.

After a scoreless eighth, the Hilltoppers took an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth with a two-out bases-loaded single by Kyler Kerlin

Eric Worden pitched the game's final three innings to shut the door on the Patriots and earn his first win of the season.

SEU is back in action tomorrow as they conclude their series with UTT. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
