Hilltoppers win big in game one then drop game two of doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team split their doubleheader with Texas A&M Kingsville winning game one 10-1 then losing game two 7-0.

 

Game One: SEU 10, TAMUK 1

 

After a scoreless first, the Hilltoppers drove in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly. Hunter Conner picked up his first RBI of the game on the sacrifice, giving SEU an early 1-0 lead. 

 

In the top of the third, the Javelinas tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single. In the bottom of the third, the Hilltoppers put up four runs to retake the lead.  Jake Hahn doubled to deep left-center and Turner Olson later drove in two runs on an RBI double to left field, before Chase Cos singled home Olson to give the Hilltoppers a 5-1 lead.  

 

After a scoreless fourth, the Hilltoppers put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Hunter Conner picked up his second and third RBIs of the game on a two-run single to left field. Morgan Allen later doubled down the left-field line to drive home a run, and Kyler Kerlin drove in the game's final runs on a two-run single, giving SEU a 10-1 lead.  

 

LUKE SHORT went the distance allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight batters in seven innings. 

 

Game Two: TAMUK 7, SEU 0

 

The Javelinas wasted no time getting on the board as they took an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single to left field.

 

After three scoreless innings, the Javelinas added on to their lead, when they put up two runs in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0.

 

In the seventh, the Javelinas drove in four runs to bring the score to 7-0. A solo home run, an RBI double, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly helped the Javelinas extend their lead. 

 

Starting pitcher, Eric Worden pitched 4 ? innings allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out five batters. Braden Olson, Garret Phillips, and Devin McGrath combined to pitch the final 2 ? innings allowing four earned runs on four hits.

 

In the last home game of the regular season, SEU closes out their series against TAMUK Saturday as they look to take the series win. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
