Hilltoppers Drop Game One to #15 Angelo State in Extra Innings

St. Edward's Baseball dropped series opener to the 15th-ranked Angelo State 11-9 in extra innings.

After three scoreless innings ASU got on the board first putting up one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.
After ASU scored three runs in the top of the sixth, the Hilltoppers plated 3 runs on a Davis Drewek homerun to reduce the lead to 7-3.

ASU tallied two more runs in the ninth, taking a 9-3 lead headed into the bottom of the ninth.  The Hilltoppers refused to go quietly.  After 2 bases-loaded walks cut the lead to 9-4, Cullen Ainsworth hit an inside the park grand slam to tie the score 9-9 and force extra inning.
 
ASU scored two runs in the top of the 10th on a single, a walk, 2 passed balls and a sacrifice fly. The Hilltoppers were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, dropping game one of the series 11-9.

Wesley Gafford started on the mound for the Hilltoppers going five innings, with 4 strikeouts while giving up 4 runs on 8 hits.  Brady Putnik, Alejandro Betancourt and Austin Essex combined for 4.2 innings of play.  Jayson Flores picked up the loss for Hilltoppers bringing his record to 1-4 on the season. 

The Hilltoppers are back in action Saturday for games two and three of the series. First pitch at noon at Lucian Hamilton Field.
