Hilltoppers take game one against # 13 Buffs in offensive explosion

CANYON, Texas - In game one of their four-game series, the St. Edward's baseball team defeated #13 West Texas A&M 14-11. 

 

The Hilltoppers scored early and often as they put up four runs in the top of the first. Two RBI singles by Stacey Bailey and Eric Worden gave the Hilltoppers an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, a two-run double by Turner Olson extended SEU's lead to 4-0. 

 

In the bottom of the first, an RBI single by the Buffs cut the deficit to 4-1. 

 

Eric Worden picked up his second RBI on another single to give the Hilltoppers a 5-1 lead in the third. 

 

The Buffs drove in a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 5-2. 

 

Cullen Ainsworth drove in a run on an RBI single to right field in the fifth, bringing the score to 6-2. 

 

Later in the inning, the Buffs hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 6-3.

 

Morgan Allen singled to center field in the top of the sixth, driving home a run to extend the Hilltoppers lead to 7-3. 

 

The Hilltoppers pulled away in the top of the ninth, driving home seven runs to take a commanding 14-3 lead. Kyler Kerlin, Cullen Ainsworth, and Davis Drewek each had RBI singles. Turner Olson drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk, and Hunter Conner smacked a three-run triple down the right-field line to cap off the monster inning for the Hilltoppers. 

 

The Buffs put up eight runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Eric Worden shut the door with the bases loaded to pick up the save.

 

Wesley Gafford pitched six innings giving up two earned runs on nine hits while striking out nine batters in the win.

 

SEU is back in action Saturday with a doubleheader against WT A&M. First pitch for game one is set for 4 pm.
