Hilltoppers split doubleheader to take 2-1 series lead against #13 Buffs

CANYON, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team split their doubleheader against #13 West Texas A&M losing game one 2-0 and winning game two 8-5.

 

Game One: WT 2, SEU 0

 

In game one, both starting pitchers were exceptional. Both starters combined to allow just nine hits and one earned run in seven innings.

 

The game's only runs came in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by the Buffs.

 

Luke Short pitched six innings allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out six batters in the loss.

 

Game Two: SEU 8, WT 5

 

The Buffs got on the board early courteous of a solo home run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

 

In the third, a wild pitch and an error allowed the Buffs to extend their lead to 3-0.

 

The Hilltoppers got on the board in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Stacey Bailey drove in a run on an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch. 

 

In the fifth, the Hilltoppers tied the game up at 3-3 on a groundout to second by Kyler Kerlin.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Buffs retook the lead on a two-run single down the left-field line to go up 5-3.

 

In the top of the sixth, an RBI single by Eric Worden cut the lead to 5-4. 

 

In the top of the seventh, the Hilltoppers took their first lead of the game. JAKE HAHN tied the game up with two outs on an RBI single to left field. CULLEN AINSWORTH later hit a three-run home run over the left-field wall to take an 8-5 lead.

 

The Buffs went three up three down in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

 

Jack Granack pitched four-plus innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. Jayson Flores earned the win, pitching two-plus innings while allowing just two hits and no runs.

 

The Hilltoppers are back in action tomorrow to close out the series. First pitch is set for 11:00 am.
