Hilltopper bats stay hot to clinch series win over #13 Buffs

CANYON, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team defeated #13 West Texas A&M 18-5 to win the series 3-1. The win also means the Hilltoppers have clinched the sixth seed in the LSC Championship. 

 

The Hilltoppers wasted no time getting on the board as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI single by Stacey Bailey

 

The Buffs drove in three runs to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. A two-run homer and an RBI double allowed the Buffs to take the lead.

 

Morgan Allen tied the game at 3-3 on a two-run double down the left-field line in the top of the second. Later in the inning, the Buffs retook the lead on an RBI single up the middle bringing the score to 4-3.

 

Leading off the top of the third, Jake Hahn went yard over the left-field wall to tie the game up at 4-4. The Buffs took a 5-4 lead on an RBI double to right-center field in the bottom of the third. 

 

In the fourth, the Hilltoppers put distance between themselves and the Buffs as they drove in six runs to take a 10-5 lead. Carlo Figueroa hit a solo home run to get things started. Turner Olson later doubled down the left-field line to drive home two runs. Stacey Bailey then drove home Olson on an RBI single up the middle. Guilio Monello capped off the inning with a two-run double to left field. 

 

In the fifth, the Hilltoppers added to their lead courtesy of RBI singles by Turner Olson and Jake Hahn. The two singles allowed the Hilltoppers to extend their lead to 12-5. 

 

Guilio Monello picked up his third RBI of the afternoon on the double to right-center field in the top of the sixth.

 

In the seventh, the Hilltoppers added five runs to shut the door on the Buffs. A passed ball and an RBI single by Josh Graham gave the Hilltoppers a 15-5 lead. Morgan Allen hit a bases-clearing triple to right-center field with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 18-5.   

 

The Hilltoppers used a total of six pitchers to get the win in the series finale. Garret Phillips was awarded the win pitching one inning while giving up three hits and one run in the win.

 

The Hilltoppers will travel to Lubbock to take on Lubbock Christian in a best of three series in the opening round of the LSC Baseball Championship Tournament next weekend. The Hilltoppers split their four-game series with the Chaps in the regular season.
