PUEBLO, Colo. – CULLEN AINSWORTH hit a two-run blast in the top of the ninth, and closer JACK ENGELMANN struck out three consecutive hitters to pick up his second save of the season in St. Edward's baseball's 4-2 win over Colorado State University-Pueblo.
"We got some great pitching performances by all three guys today. They attacked the strike zone and made big pitches when needed," St. Edward's head baseball coach Bryan Faulds says. "This weekend showed we can win games in many different ways. Yesterday, we scored 22 runs, and today we scored four and were still able to win the ball game."
St. Edward's strung together fewer hits but continued to flex its power with three home runs accounting for all four Hilltopper runs.
CONNOR COX continued the scorching start to his collegiate career, hitting a solo home run in the top of the second inning with two outs and a full count. It was the freshman's second home run this season. Cox's 1-for-2 performance at the plate brought his season totals to 8-for-16 with eight RBIs and nine runs scored.
DAVIS DREWEK added his two-out solo home run in the fourth inning, driving the first pitch of the at-bat over the right-center fence for the 2-0 lead.
JACK GRANACK started on the mound for St. Edward's and pitched four scoreless innings with five hits and five strikeouts. LUKE SHORT was the first pitcher out of the bullpen and delivered five strikeouts of his own. Short held CSU-Pueblo scoreless for three innings before Brady Ingalls hit a two-run blast to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.
KYLER KERLIN sparked the Hilltoppers with a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning. Ainsworth followed with a shot over the left-field fence on an 0-1 count to deliver the 4-2 lead. Drewek and Ainsworth are tied for the team lead with three home runs, each with 10 RBIs.
St. Edward's improves to 6-0 this season with all six games on the road. The Hilltoppers will return home to host a four-game series against West Texas A&M from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 18, with a doubleheader on Saturday.
