Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – St. Edward's baseball swept Saturday's doubleheader against Texas Permian Basin to take a 3-0 lead in the four-game series.

GAME 1: St. Edward's 14, Texas Permian Basin 5

St. Edward's added patience at the plate to its early-season power surge, drawing a season-high 13 walks and combining them with nine hits to turn them into 14 runs to claim its second consecutive win over the Texas Permian Basin.

Seven different Hilltoppers got a hit, but CONNOR COX did much of the damage at the plate with a 3-for-4 hitting performance with three RBI and two runs scored.

St. Edward's scored an early run on an error in the top of the first, then added more in the second with a three-RBI double to left field by Cox for the 4-0 lead.

Texas Permian Basin took advantage of back-to-back walks to start the second, followed by a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt from CULLEN AINSWORTH behind the plate to move them into scoring position. The Falcons scored on a Jack Haggerty groundout to first.

St. Edward's kicked off the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Cox and LANCE LITTLE through the right side. Texas Permian Basin replaced Pollard with Ryan Robinson, who surrendered a single to DAVIS DREWEK to load the bases.

Robinson walked two consecutive hitters to score two runs, then hit WESTON SYMES for a third run and balked to score another.

Babcock-Barr hit an RBI single through the right side, then Glowacki drove another run in on a fielder's choice.

HUNTER CONNER doubled down the left-field line to open the sixth, and Symes got hit by a pitch to put two on. KYLER KERLIN executed a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position, and TREVOR SEBEK walked to load the bases. REID STIEFEL pinch-hit for GRAYSON THALLMAN and drew a walk to score Conner.

Little grounded into a fielder's choice to score Symes, the Hilltoppers scored two more on a pair of throwing errors, and Ainsworth added an RBI single followed by LUKE JOHNSON's RBI triple for the 14-3 lead.

Texas Permian Basin added two more on a Mason Hamlin two-RBI double through the left side in the bottom of the inning.

JACK GRANACK started for St. Edward's and went five innings with four strikeouts, and only one of the three runs surrendered earned for his third win. NICOLAS DAVIS threw two innings, striking out two with two runs scored.

GAME 2: St. Edward's 7, Texas Permian Basin 6

TREVOR SEBEK perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 12th inning to give St. Edward's the final run needed in a 7-6 win over Texas Permian Basin.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, plating three runs in the first and two more in the third. Hamlin sparked Texas Permian Basin with a leadoff double down the left-field line, and St. Edward's starter LUKE SHORT walked the next two hitters to load the bases.

The Falcons scored one run on a passed ball and two more on two separate groundouts in the infield. T. McDaniel added two more with a two-out, two-RBI single to right-center.

St. Edward's scored four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game. JOSH GRAHAM hit a leadoff double in the fifth, and MATTHEW GILES drew a walk, setting up Sebek's RBI single to left-center. Little followed with a three-run blast. HUNTER CONNER tied the game the next inning with a bunt for a single, scoring Ainsworth.

Little added an RBI single up the middle to give St. Edward's a brief lead in the top of the seventh, but Texas Permian Basin responded with an RBI double from Mackenzie in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings.

Only one Texas Permian Basin runner reached base successfully over the next few innings until St. Edward's went ahead in the top of the 12th.

WESTON SYMES started the inning with a free base after getting hit by a pitch. AJ MYERS followed with an infield single to put runners in the corners. Then, Sebek executed a sacrifice bunt to score Symes, giving the Hilltoppers the one-run lead.

Relief pitcher KEVIN SKWERES retired the side in order with two strikeouts to end the game with his second win of the season. LUKE SHORT started on the mound and went seven innings with five strikeouts and five of the six runs surrendered earned.
