Baseball Falls in Extra Innings To Top-Ranked Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Nine innings weren't enough to settle the contest between the two top-10 ranked titans in the Lone Star Conference, with top-ranked Angelo State defeating the St. Edward's Hilltoppers baseball team 7-6 in 11 innings.

Angelo State struck first, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Tripp Clark to right field to take the early lead. The Rams added another run in the third on an RBI double from Jacob Guerrero to right center.

DAVIS DREWEK put St. Edward's on the board with a solo blast driven down the right-field line for his sixth home run of the season.

The Rams responded with three consecutive singles to open the fourth, scoring on an RBI single from Justin Harris to right center before St. Edward's starting pitcher WESLEY GAFFORD retired the next three hitters in order, striking out the last two.

LUKE JOHNSON sparked St. Edward's with a one-out double to right field, moving to third on a groundout from MATTHEW GILES. Then, KYLER KERLIN drew a walk, and WESTON SYMES reached on an error, scoring Johnson. TREVOR SEBEK followed with an RBI single to right field, with Symes getting thrown out at third to end the inning.

Angelo State went to its bullpen in the seventh for the second time, inserting Caleb Heuertz for Austin Teel. Heuertz hit CONNOR COX and LANCE LITTLE to open the inning, then CULLEN AINSWORTH grounded into a fielder's choice with the out at third. Then, Drewek struck again with a three-run blast to right field to give St. Edward's the lead.

A walk and an infield single put two on with one out for Angelo State in the bottom of the ninth, ending Gafford's day after 8.1 innings with six strikeouts and one walk, having five runs attributed to him and ten hits surrendered. KEVIN SKWERES replaced him and hit Guerrero to load the bases. Clark followed with a groundout to third that scored one run, then Tayten Tredaway walked to reload the bases and set up Austin Beck's two-RBI double to right center to tie the game.

Both teams went down in order in the 10th, and St. Edward's grounded into an inning-ending double play in the 11th. Thomas Cain drew a leadoff walk for Angelo State in the bottom of the inning, and St. Edward's replaced Skweres with NICOLAS DAVIS, who surrendered a double to Guerrero, and the walk-off single through the right side to Clark.

St. Edward's drops to 32-10 with the loss and 30-10 in conference play. Both teams will play tomorrow in a doubleheader that starts at 4:00 p.m.
