SAN ANGELO, Texas – One comeback fell short, and another never materialized for the St. Edward's baseball team in two losses to top-ranked Angelo State.
GAME 1: Angelo State 9, St. Edward's 6
St. Edward's plated five runs in the seventh inning but left two stranded to end its rally in a 9-6 loss to Angelo State.
It was all Angelo State early, scoring two runs in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth for the 9-0 lead. Rams' cleanup hitter Austin Beck was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Angelo State scored two runs on wild pitches.
JACK GRANACK (L, 5-6) started on the mound and went three innings with two of the five runs surrendered earned. He gave up four hits and struck out two with a walk in the loss. GEORGE HETTRICK replaced him and surrendered three hits and three walks for four runs scored.
St. Edward's finally broke through in the sixth with an RBI single to center field from LANCE LITTLE, scoring WESTON SYMES, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
RYAN FEDDERSEN pinch-hit to lead off the seventh and sparked the Hilltoppers with an infield single. BRETT ZENK and KYLER KERLIN followed with back-to-back singles to right field. Then, after JOSH GRAHAM went down swinging, TREVOR SEBEK grounded out to first, scoring Feddersen.
CONNOR COX followed with an RBI single to center field, leaving runners on the corners, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, Little hit a two-RBI single to right field. MATT JOHNSON pinch-hit for CULLEN AINSWORTH and reached on an error, and DAVIS DREWEK delivered an RBI single to right field. Feddersen, who led off the inning with a hit, grounded out to end the game.
GAME 2: Angelo State 7, St. Edward's 1
An error cost St. Edward's four unearned runs in the second inning, and the Hilltoppers couldn't recover, scoring just one run off five hits in a 7-1 loss.
Tredaway led the second inning with a double to left center. Then, Harris bunted right back to the pitcher's mound, but LUKE SHORT's throw to get Tredaway out at third got past TREVOR SEBEK scored one unearned run, and put Harris at third. Angelo State followed with three more consecutive bunts, getting two singles and an out at home on a fielder's choice.
Another error cost the Hilltoppers another run and loaded the bases, followed by two more walks to plate two more runs. A leadoff triple and another sacrifice bunt added another run for Angelo State in the third.
Little and Ainsworth hit back-to-back singles in the fourth, setting up Feddrson's RBI single with two outs for the Hilltoppers' lone run.
Another bunt and an infield single scored two more for the Rams.
Short (L, 9-1) pitched the entire game, striking out seven with three earned runs, nine hits, and two walks in his first loss of the season.
St. Edward's drops to 32-12 with a 30-12 conference record. The Hilltoppers will conclude the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
