AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's offense sparked but never ignited as three momentum-killing double plays extinguished the Hilltoppers' best scoring opportunities in a 5-1 loss to the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves.
St. Edward's opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single from
TREVOR SEBEK, followed by CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Taylor Curtis (W, 1-0) plunking
CONNOR COX to put two on with no outs. However,
LANCE LITTLE grounded into a double play, and
DAVIS DREWEK flied out to deep center to leave Sebek stranded at third.
The Hilltoppers put two on with one out in the third with back-to-back singles on an opposite-field drive from
WESTON SYMES and a bunt by Sebek. The ThunderWolves escaped unscathed when Cox lined into a 6-4 double play.
DILLON FLORES broke through the scoreless stalemate in the bottom of the fourth with a solo blast to left for his second home run of the season.
After leaving five runners stranded through four innings against St. Edward's starter
BRENNAN BERDON (L, 0-1), CSU-Pueblo finally capitalized in the top of the fifth. Rob Mansour hit a leadoff single through the right field with a throwing error that advanced him to second. Kade Snodgrass moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Berdon battled back from walking Wyatt Reginato to put runners on the corners by striking out Christian Casteneda but walked Brad Stone with a wild pitch on ball four to score Mansour, followed by an RBI single to Kysen Howard for the 2-1 lead.
NICK DAVIS replaced Berdon, ending his day after 4.2 innings with four hits, six walks, and two runs allowed.
With a 2-1 lead, CSU-Pueblo turned to its bullpen, replacing Curtis with Zach Pratt to start the inning. Cox greeted him with a leadoff single, and Little drew a walk, but Drewek grounded out, and Flores flied into a double play with Cox thrown out trying to score on the tag.
Davis led St. Edward's through two scoreless innings until an error allowed CSU-Pueblo an unearned insurance run on a Snodgrass RBI double to left before reliever
JAKUB RAYFIELD struck out Reginato to end the eighth.
CSU-Pueblo added two more runs in the ninth with back-to-back, identical RBI doubles from Howard and Quintana down the left-field line.
Sebek hit 2-for-4, and Cox, Flores, Connor, and Symes each had one hit, with Flores delivering the lone run with his home run. St. Edward's drops to 3-2 this season and will play CSU-Pueblo again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
