LUBBOCK, Texas – A two-out, two-RBI double from
TREVOR SEBEK in the top of the fifth sparked a 13-3 St. Edward's baseball rally over the final three innings to take the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 20 Lubbock Christian with a 13-9 comeback win.
Lubbock Christian struck early with a single run off starting pitcher
MARK SELLERS in the first, turning a one-out walk from Shea Bowen into an RBI single from Jarred Gibson after the former stole second.
The Chapparals extended the lead with five runs in the fourth inning. Ryan Ball hit a leadoff single, and Hayden Blair followed with an RBI triple to right field. Jaxson Edwards followed with a solo blast down the left-field line, Carson Ogilvie doubled up the middle, and Gibson drove him in with a single through the left side.
After Sellers walked Nate Van Maanen, St. Edward's turned to
NICK DAVIS out of the bullpen. Davis surrendered an RBI single up the middle to Brevin McCool before the Hilltoppers got out of the inning with a 6-0 deficit.
KYLER KERLIN drew a walk, and
RYAN FEDDERSEN doubled down the left-field line to put two runners in scoring position in the fifth inning. After
WESTON SYMES lined out to first for the second out of the inning,
TREVOR SEBEK drove in Kerlin and Federseen with a double to left-center.
DAVIS DREWEK and
LANCE LITTLE followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases, and
DIEGO SOLIS hit an RBI infield single into the gap between first and second, beating the throw after Van Maanen stopped the ball from going into the outfield with the diving stop. The Hilltoppers added a fourth run on a wild pitch.
Lubbock Christian got two runs back with an RBI single from Bowen, followed by Ogilvie scoring while Bowen was in a rundown.
Feddersen picked up the scoring spree again in the sixth with the three-run blast, driving the first pitch to left field and over the fence. After Lubbock Christian walked three consecutive Hilltoppers, Solis beat out a double player attempt to drive in Symes on the fielder's choice with the out at second, then Sebek gave St. Edward's the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
St. Edward's scored four runs with two outs again in the seventh when an error extended the inning and scored a run. Drewek followed with a two-RBI double to left-center, and
LANCE LITTLE reached on an error that scored another run for the 13-8 lead.
Lubbock Christian managed one run in the bottom of the seventh on a double steal with runners in the corners, but Gibson popped up to third to end the game.
AUSTIN ESSEX pitched 2.2 innings in relief for the win, striking out two with four hits and a single run surrendered. Feddersen hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs and scored two runs, while Sebek and Davis scored two hits and two RBIs each while combining for five runs scored.
