Week at the Hilltop: Softball Home Opener, Nationally-Ranked Basketball Opponents, and Track

| By:
This #WeekAtTheHilltop, softball celebrates National Girls & Women's in Sports Day during its home opener, both men's and women's basketball host nationally-ranked teams, baseball is on the road against Eastern New Mexico, and indoor track & field is in Houston.

The St. Edward's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will also hold a 50/50 cash-only raffle benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation during the men's and women's basketball Thursday games. Tickets are $5 for one ticket or $20 for five tickets.

Softball (3-2, 0-0)
Softball opened the season by splitting the Friday and Saturday doubleheaders, then defeating Saint Martin's to leave the First PItch Invitational with a winning record.

The Hilltoppers got great production from the top of the lineup. Right fielder KATIE DILLON moved into the leadoff spot and hit .444 with a triple, driving in two RBIs and scoring four runs. She was also disciplined at the plate, drawing three walks, and stole two bases.

ELLA HUTZLER and Sloan Hill flashed a power element to the St. Edward's offense. Hutzler hit .429 with a double and a home run, recording three RBI. Hill led the team with three doubles on a .385 batting average. St Edward's also got production from first-year SOFIA APONTE, who hit .308 with four runs scored and a team-high four RBI.

First-year pitcher MADDIE AGUILAR left the weekend with a 2-0 record, sophomore transfer HALEY CARMONA a team-best 3.62 ERA, and junior KYLEN PADGETT seven strikeouts.

St. Edward's hosts MSU-Denver and Colorado Christian. The Hilltoppers are 4-4 all-time against MSU-Denver, splitting last year's doubleheader in Denver, and are 0-9 all-time against Colorado Christian.

Women's Basketball (10-13, 6-8)
St. Edward's women's basketball hosts two top-10 nationally-ranked teams, starting with No. 2 Texas Woman's University (21-1, 14-1) on Thursday and then No. 7 UT Tyler (19-2, 14-1) on Saturday.

Women's basketball will celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Thursday, throwing out the first pitch at softball, then facing the arduous task of slowing down Ashley Ingram and Scout Huffman, who combined for 40 points on 15-24 shooting. Ingram had an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double and is third in the conference in points, rebounds, and assists.

St. Edward's outscored Texas Woman's University in both second-half quarters of a nine-point road loss but couldn't overcome a rough first quarter.

UT Tyler has the second-stingiest field-goal percentage defense in the nation. It also takes care of the ball and leads the LSC in 3-pointers per game.

J.P. remains the conference leader in assists and assists per game and is seventh in points per game at 14.1. BAILEY FEATHERSTONE has been a revelation off the bench the last three weeks, scoring double figures in five of St. Edward's previous six games, including a career-high 24 in the Hilltoppers' win over Texas A&M International. St. Edward's is 4-3 over that stretch.

Men's Basketball (14-9, 8-6)
JAMISON KAY has increased his scoring over the last two weeks, reaching double figures in three consecutive games. He scored a career-high 26 points against Texas A&M International, taking over in the second half and overtime.

St. Edward's is embracing the 6-foot-7 forward's versatility. Against Angelo State, he brought the ball up as a pressure release, and down the stretch, against Texas A&M International, head coach Andre Cook put the ball in his hands in an inverted pick-and-pop game with GAVINO RAMOS

Ramos remains one of the steadiest playmakers in the Lone Star Conference, ranking second in assists, and won Defensive Player of the Week after recording four steals against Texas A&M-Kingsville and a game-saving block against Texas A&M International.

Dallas Baptist (21-3, 13-2) is ranked No. 8 in the nation and comes in on a seven-game win streak that started against St. Edward's in the first meeting when the Hilltoppers struggled offensively in the first half, and Drew Calderon hit seven 3-pointers.

St. Edward's is looking to avenge an earlier loss to UT Tyler (8-13, 5-10) when a late turnover cost the Hilltoppers an opportunity to send the game into overtime. The Patriots split last week's games, losing to Cameron and defeating Oklahoma Christian.

Baseball (3-1, 3-1)
St. Edward's baseball opened the season with an emphatic 3-1 series win over No. 21-ranked West Texas A&M. The Hilltoppers were solid on the mound, led by LSC Pitcher of the Week KOBE JARAMILLO. They were excellent at executing the little things defensively in three of the four games and manufactured runs up and down the lineup.

MARCO BARRERA leads St. Edward's with a .400 batting average and five RBI after four games, drawing four walks. Four other Hilltoppers are hitting .300 or better. CONNOR COX remains steady, hitting .385 with two RBI. DYLAN TATE had four hits and a spectacular defensive play. TREVOR SEBEK was consistent with his bat and glove, and CARLO FIGUEROA hit .308 with three runs scored.

Eastern New Mexico picked up a 3-1 series win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road, winning the first three games. Willie Ponce and Anthony Cortese hit .462 and .438 and combined for five RBI and nine runs.

Both teams split last year's series, with the Hilltoppers taking the previous two games.

Indoor Track and Field
St. Edward's returns to Houston for the FasTrack Athletix Indoor Last Chance Qualifier as the final meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships. The Hilltoppers have focused mostly on sprints through the first few meets and got a stellar performance from MIA RIVERA in the 3K, setting a new program record.
