PORTALES, N.M. – Reigning Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week
KOBE JARAMILLO posted 10 strikeouts, and St. Edward's baseball strung together a season-high 18 hits to open its four-game road series against Eastern New Mexico University with an 8-5 victory.
TRAVIS CHESTNUT set St. Edward's out on an auspicious start with a leadoff opposite-field double, and
TREVOR SEBEK drove him in with an RBI single to left field. Then, Jaramillo struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.
Jaramillo hit Willie Ponce to open the bottom of the second, but St. Edward's recovered with the 4-6-3 double play, and Jaramillo struck out Gideon.
Eastern New Mexico starting pitcher Roman Connolly loaded the bases with one out in the third, surrendering a single to Sebek and hitting
CARLO FIGUEROA and
MARCO BARRERA.
CONNOR COX followed with a two-RBI double to deep center field, and
KHAMANI BLAKNEY hit a sacrifice fly to score Barrera.
DYLAN TATE capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single to center field.
Jaramillo surrendered his first walk of the season, and Terilli put the first run on him with a two-run blast to left field. St. Edward's ace responded with his sixth strikeout of the day to end the inning.
St. Edward's opened the fourth with three consecutive singles from Chestnut, Sebek, and Figueroa, with the latter driving in Sebek from second base on the shot to center field. Eastern New Mexico turned to DiMatteo out of the bullpen, and he reloaded the bases, walking Cox to set up Blakney's RBI on the fielder's choice.
Jaramillo retired six of eight in the fourth and fifth innings, racking up three more strikeouts, but Cortese hit another two-run blast in the sixth, driving in Freeman, who reached on a leadoff single.
St. Edward's recorded three singles in the seventh and added an insurance run on an error to go up 8-4.
MARLEY BERNAL came out of the bullpen in the seventh and retired the Greyhounds in order. Bernal got in trouble with two walks in the eighth, but Ponce grounded into a double play, and Bernal struck out Archuleta to escape.
Bernal walked two more Greyhounds to open the ninth, ending his afternoon.
PARKER TENNILL came out of the bullpen, walked Pruitt to load the bases, and then surrendered a run on a sacrifice fly. Tennill settled in, struck Terilli out looking in three pitches, hit Freeman, and got Cortese to ground out to pick up the save.
Sebek hit 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Chestnut,
CARLO FIGUEROA, Barrera, Cox, Tate,
NICHOLAS ANDERSON, and
JEREMY HILL all had two hits. Cox and Blakney totaled two RBI each, and Figueroa scored a team-high three runs.
St. Edward's improves to 4-1. The Hilltoppers and Greyhounds will continue the series with a doubleheader tomorrow.
