AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma Christian broke into its bullpen early and St. Edward's baseball made the Eagles pay with a five-run third inning and four-run sixth on its way to a 12-2 run-rule victory to open the four-game series.
CONNOR COX led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, driving in four RBI and scoring a run, and starting pitcher
KOBE JARAMILLO (W, 6-0) was dominant again with eight strikeouts to two walks, four hits, and two runs surrendered.
Oklahoma Christian starter Ian Clifton was solid, throwing two scoreless innings with two walks and no hits surrendered. Still, the Eagles turned to Tim Malone to start the third and St. Edward's greeted him with five runs on five hits, doing all the damage with two outs.
Cox started the scoring spree with a double in the furthest corner of fair territory down the right-field line, and
LANCE LITTLE ripped a shot right past Malone up the middle for the RBI single.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with a single and walk, prompting Oklahoma Christian to turn to Charlie McBride, who compounded the Eagles' woes with back-to-back walks and a two-RBI single through the left side by
GRAYSON THALLMAN for the 5-0 lead.
DYLAN TATE added another run in the fourth with a leadoff home run, tying the team lead with five on the season for his 26th RBI.
Cox added two more runs with an RBI double to left field, scoring Tate and
TREVOR SEBEK, and Oklahoma Christian reclaimed them with a two-run blast from Reed Thomas in the sixth.
Oklahoma Christian's bullpen struggles continue in the sixth when Breck Carver hit two hitters and walked another to load the bases, then two Hilltoppers scored on a throwing error. Braden Fowler replaced Carver, hit Tate, and surrendered a two-RBI single through the right side to Cox for the 12-2 lead.
FINN MIGNEREY replaced Jaramillo in the seventh and St. Edward's ended the game with a 4-6-3 double play. St. Edward's and Oklahoma Christian will continue the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow.
