AUSTIN, Texas – DYLAN TATE and MARCO BARRERA combined to hit a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate with the former scoring three runs and the latter driving in three RBI to lead St. Edward's baseball to a 7-4 victory over Oklahoma Christian.
Oklahoma Christian continued its Game 1 strategy of going to its bullpen early and often and the Hilltoppers punished the Eagles for it.
After a scoreless first two innings, Oklahoma Christian starter Michael Adair surrendered a one-out single up the middle to Tate, prompting the Eagles to call Tristan Copeland out of the bullpen. The senior pitcher hit a batter and walked another, loading the bases for Barrera's two-RBI double to right field. Copeland followed that by surrendering another run with a balk.
Oklahoma Christian responded in its next at-bat with a two-RBI single to center field from Justin Spencer in the top of the fourth.
Copeland walked three in the bottom of the inning and surrendered a sacrifice fly to CONNOR COX and an RBI double to deep right-center from LANCE LITTLE for the 5-2 lead. Barrera and Chestnut hit back-to-back RBI singles through the infield in the sixth, extending the lead.
Hunter Jones hit a one-out, two-run blast in the top of the seventh, but St. Edward's middle infield recorded consecutive outs to end the game.
GEORGE HETTRICK (W, 4-2) went five innings, striking out five with four hits, four walks, and two runs surrendered. PARKER TENNILL went two innings and picked up his seventh save in 11 appearances.
