Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Oklahoma Christian

AUSTIN, Texas – An error with two outs in the top of the seventh plated two runs, giving Oklahoma Christian a 5-4 win over St. Edward's baseball to split the doubleheader and avoid the series sweep.

JAKUB RAYFIELD went six innings and surrendered three runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in the no-decision.

After Rayfield retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the first inning, Oklahoma Christian broke through with three runs on three hits and two walks in the second. Cason Gregory put the Eagles on the scoreboard with an RBI double down the right-field line, then Justin Spencer delivered a two-RBI single through the right side.

TRAVIS CHESTNUT answered with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning, tying MARCO BARRERA and DYLAN TATE for the team lead with five. After a pitch plunked CARLO FIGUEROA and an error put runners on the corners with DIEGO SOLIS at first, JOSH GRAHAM perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to score Figueroa.

After drawing four walks and getting hit twice in the first two games of the series, Figueroa finally received a pitch to swing at in the bottom of the fourth, driving it for a leadoff double down the right-field line. TREVOR SEBEK drove him in with a two-run blast to right field for the 4-3 lead.

Rayfield retired the side in order in the fifth and left one stranded in the sixth, and St. Edward's turned to its bullpen to start the seventh. BEN SMEDSHAMMER began the inning and surrendered a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt before PARKER TENNILL took over.

Tennill got Elijah Laus to fly out before hitting Trey Migl. An error on Jontae Hennesy's drive to right field plated two runs, giving Oklahoma Christian the game.

After CONNOR COX flied out to right field, LANCE LITTLE and Barrera hit back-to-back singles, but Chestnut went down swinging and pinch-runner JAKE WILEY was caught stealing third to end the game.

St. Edward's drops to 21-8 with a 20-7 conference record after the loss. The series concludes tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game.
