Baseball Clinches Series Win Over Oklahoma Christian

AUSTIN, Texas – PARKER TENNILL picked up his seventh save of the season and the No. 14-ranked St. Edward's baseball team wrapped up a 3-1 series win over Oklahoma Christian with an 11-10 victory over the Eagles.

CONNOR COX accounted for nine of St. Edward's 11 runs, driving in six RBI and scoring three in a 4-for-5 performance.

Oklahoma Christian struck first on a three-run blast from Elijah Laus in the top of the second inning, scoring Cason Gregory and Michael Adair, who reached on a double and a walk.

St. Edward's starter Carson Blakely surrendered a leadoff single up the middle to Laus in the fourth. Laus stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Hilltoppers turned to MARLEY BERNAL out of the bullpen, Trey Migl scored Laus on a groundout, and Bernal struck out Hunter Jones to end the inning with a 4-0 Oklahoma Christian lead.

CARLO FIGUEROA drew a leadoff walk and the Hilltoppers got a pair of infield singles to load the bases. DAWSON STUTZ rocketed a shot at third baseman Justin Spencer, glancing off him before he could react for one single. TREVOR SEBEK lined a shot off the fingertips of first baseman Reed Thomas's glove for the other. Then, Cox hit a frozen rope grand slam to right field to tie the game.

St. Edward's added five runs on four hits in the sixth, taking advantage of two errors and three walks against the shaky Oklahoma Christian bullpen.

Stutz drew a leadoff walk, Sebek singled through the left side, and DYLAN TATE moved both into scoring position with a sac bunt, setting up Cox's two-RBI single through the right side.

LANCE LITTLE and MARCO BARRERA followed with back-to-back singles. Little placed an infield single up the middle, and Barrera had an RBI through the right side. CARLO FIGUEROA drew a walk to load the bases, and NICHOLAS ANDERSON took another to plate a run. A throwing error on Stutz's grounder scored another run for the 9-4 lead. Little and Barrera each had a sac fly in the seventh to extend the lead to 11-4.

St. Edward's had an opportunity for a walk-off run-rule in the eighth, leaving three runners stranded. BEN SMEDSHAMMER started the ninth out of the bullpen and struggled, walking two, striking out one, then surrendering back-to-back singles. The Hilltoppers went through four other pitchers, surrendering six runs on three hits with five walks and one hit batter before Tennill entered the game to induce the final out on a grounder back to the mound.

Bernal (W, 4-0) went 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, only three hits, and one walk surrendered. Sebek hit 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Little, Barrera, and TRAVIS CHESTNUT each hit 2-for-4.

St. Edward's improves to 22-8 with a 21-7 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel to San Antonio next weekend to play St. Mary's in a four-game series.
