Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – MARCO BARRERA hit two home runs and six Hilltoppers hit over .300 in a doubleheader victories over Sul Ross State, clinching the four-game series with an opportunity to sweep the Lobos on Sunday. 
 
Game 1: St. Edward's 10, Sul Ross State 9
St. Edward's rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to avoid a Sul Ross State upset, escaping with a 10-9 win over the Lobos. 
 
TREVOR SEBEK opened the game with a leadoff bunt for a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, then third on a groundout, scoring on CONNOR COX's groundout for the lead. Alfonso Lopez responded in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run. 
 
St. Edward's scored four runs on five hits in the second, doing all the damage after opening the inning with consecutive outs. NICHOLAS ANDERSON walked, GRAYSON THALLMAN singled, and Sebek plated both with a two-RBI double to left field. DYLAN TATE drove in Sebek with a single up the middle, then Cox hit a two-run blast for the 6-1 lead. 
 
Sul Ross's Xavier Garcia hit a two-RBI single in the second, and the Lobos scored six runs on five hits and two errors in the third. Sul Ross State opened the third inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases, then Joseph Binder and Aaron Morales combined for three RBI with back-to-back singles. Chris Ulloa and Garcia hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Lobos the 9-6 lead before St. Edward's starter GEORGE HETTRICK struck out Ortiz to end the inning. 
 
St. Edward's rallied with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by Barrera's home run and aided by three walks and an error. 
 
Hettrick (W, 3-2) went six innings and surrendered seven earned runs with six strikeouts, one walk, and nine hits. PARKER TENNILL earned his sixth save with a scoreless inning. Sebek hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, and Cox added three RBI and a run. 
 
Game 2: St. Edward's 15, Sul Ross State 4
The second game was far less dramatic, with St. Edward's stringing together 12 hits and scoring 15 runs in the 15-4 win. 
 
Sul Ross State jumped on St. Edward's starter JAKUB RAYFIELD early, getting a solo blast from Primo Vasquez and RBI double from Rene Ramos in the first, with the latter later scoring on a wild pitch. 
 
Barrera responded with a solo blast in the second, and DIEGO SOLIS followed with an RBI single in breakout game, finishing 2-for-3 with five RBI. 
 
After Binder hit an RBI single in the third, St. Edward's reeled off 11 unanswered runs over the next few innings, scoring a combined 11 runs over the final two innings. 
 
Barrera and Chestnut each drove in two RBI, Rayfield (W, 2-3) struck out five, and St. Edward's improves to 18-6 with a 17-6 conference record and an opportunity to sweep the series on Sunday.
