AUSTIN, Texas – Baseball surrendered eight runs on four hits and two errors in the sixth inning of a 14-3 loss to the Lubbock Christian Chapparals to open the four-game series.
St. Edward's struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning.
TREVOR SEBEK,
CARLO FIGUEROA, and Marco Gonzalez hit consecutive singles to each side of the field, capped off by Gonzalez's RBI single to left-center.
CONNOR COX and
LANCE LITTLE drew back-to-back walks to add the second run.
KOBE JARAMILLO walked two Lubbock Christian batters to start the third, but the Hilltoppers turned a double play to minimize the damage before Chavez scored on a passed ball.
DYLAN TATE and
DIEGO SOLIS reached on a walk and single through the left side to start the third, and Sebek drove in Tate with a sacrifice bunt RBI for the 3-1 lead.
Jaramillo struck out the first two hitters in the fifth before surrendering a single and walk. An error extended the inning and drove in a run, and Gutierrez tied the game on an RBI single through the left side.
QUINTEN ESTRADA replaced Jaramillo to start the sixth, and York broke the game open with a grand slam.
BEN SMEDSHAMMER came out of the bullpen and walked back-to-back hitters.
FINN MIGNEREY replaced Smedshammer and induced a double play but hit two Chaps, surrendered two singles, and St. Edward's committed another error, falling behind 11-3. Baumbach hit a three-run home run in the seventh.
Jaramillo went five innings, striking out seven while surrendering four hits and five walks, and two of three runs surrendered earned.
St. Edward's drops to 24-11 with a 23-10 conference record. The Hilltoppers will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader.
