SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 21-ranked St. Edward's baseball team fell short of an opportunity to pick up a road win against top-ranked Angelo State, then dropped the second game of the doubleheader to open the series down a 2-0 hole.
Game 1: Angelo State 5, St. Edward's 4
St. Edward's twice had an opportunity to escape the seventh inning with a double play but were unsuccessful in a 5-4 loss to Angelo State.
TRAVIS CHESTNUT and
CONNOR COX opened the game with back-to-back walks that
LANCE LITTLE and
DIEGO SOLIS turned into RBI for the 2-0 lead.
St. Edward's committed an error with two outs in the second to extend the inning, leading to Austin Beck's RBI single on a bunt to half the Hilltopper lead.
Little drew a walk in the third, and
MARCO BARRERA moved him over with a double, setting up Solis's sacrifice fly for St. Edward's third run. Angelo State answered in the bottom of the inning when Jacob Guerrero drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on Chase Pendley's RBI single.
Chestnut opened the fifth with a leadoff infield single, stole second, and Cox drove him in with an RBI single through the left side.
Beck tied the game on an RBI single in the sixth, driving in Tayten Tredaway, who hit a leadoff double. St. Edward's starter
KOBE JARAMILLO walked Ethan Flodstrom to start the seventh, then exited the game for
PARKER TENNILL.
Guerrero grounded into a fielder's choice with the lead out at second but beating out the double play attempt. After Guerrero stole second, Tennill intentionally walked Brett Smajstrla to put the double play back into effect, and Weston Valasek grounded into a potential one to third, but the Hilltoppers committed an error on the play, allowing Guerrero to score the walk-off run.
Cox hit 2-for-3, and Little went 1-for-3, each notching an RBI and run. Solis had two RBI. Jaramillo struck out four with three walks and seven hits surrendered. Only three of Angelo State's five runs were earned.
Game 2: Angelo State 6, St. Edward's 3
Guerrero and Valasek each drove in two RBI, and St. Edward's left seven runners stranded in a 6-3 loss to the Rams.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but came away empty. Flodstrom and Pendley opened with a single and double, setting up Valasek's RBI on a groundout, followed by Hutchinson's RBI single up the middle.
Angelo State tacked on two more runs in the second with an RBI single for Flodstrom and an RBI triple from Guerrero.
St. Edward's broke through with a two-run blast from Chestnut in the fifth, scoring
NICHOLAS ANDERSON, who hit a leadoff single. Angelo State responded in the bottom of the inning with RBI doubles from Guerrero and Valasek for the 6-2 lead. Little hit an RBI single to center field in the seventh but was left stranded.
GEORGE HETTRICK went six innings, striking out six with one walk, eight hits, and six runs surrendered.
St. Edward's drops to 27-13 with a 26-12 conference record. Angelo State improves to 30-6, including 28-6 in conference play. Both teams will continue the series on Sunday.
