No. 21 SEU Baseball Bounces Back With Win Over Top-Ranked Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – TRAVIS CHESTNUT sparked St. Edward's with a three-run blast in the third inning, and JAKUB RAYFIELD and PARKER TENNILL combined for nine solid innings on the mound to lead the No. 21-ranked Hilltoppers past top-ranked Angelo State.

Angelo State struck first with a two-out, RBI double from Weston Valasek to left-center in the bottom of the first, scoring Chase Pendley. Rams' starting pitcher Alizaeh Gutierrez retired the first six Hilltopper hitters in order, striking out two.

TREVOR SEBEK and GRAYSON THALLMAN opened the third inning with a walk and bunt for a single. NICHOLAS ANDERSON moved both over with a sacrifice bunt, and Chestnut cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left-center, his 11th of the season.

Pendley scored again in the third, reaching on a fielder's choice and eventually scoring on a passed ball.

MARCO BARRERA sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff single to center field in the sixth, then advanced two bases on an error from Gutierrez on the mound. DIEGO SOLIS capitalized with a sacrifice fly, nothing his third RBI of the series. St. Edward's scored its fifth run on an error, and Chestnut switched modes from the long ball to small ball, scoring Sebek on a bunt for a single for the 6-2 lead.

PARKER TENNILL came out of the bullpen to start the sixth, loading the bases on two walks and an error but escaping on a 4-6 fielder's choice to keep Angelo State off the scoreboard.

Tennill retired the next six hitters in order, and LANCE LITTLE added two insurance runs with a two-RBI double to left-center in the ninth, driving in CONNOR COX and Chestnut. Tennill closed the game with a third three-up, three-down inning to pick up the save.

Rayfield struck out four with seven hits, two runs, and no walks surrendered in five innings. Tennill threw four scoreless, hitless innings, with two walks and a strikeout. Chestnut hit 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, Barrera finished 3-for-5 and a run, and Anderson was 2-for-3.
