SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 19-ranked St. Edward's baseball team could not earn a series split against top-ranked Angelo State, dropping a 12-7 game to the Rams.
St. Edward's opened the game with two runs in the first.
TRAVIS CHESTNUT drew a walk, and a pitch hit
CONNOR COX. Chestnut stole third, and
LANCE LITTLE drove him in with a groundout.
DIEGO SOLIS added the second run with an RBI double to right field.
Angelo State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chase Pendley hit an RBI triple, Lane Hutchinson drove in Pendley with a sac bunt, and Tayten Tredaway delivered an RBI single up the middle. An error added another Rams' run in the second on Ethan Flodstrom's single up the middle.
LANCE LITTLE tied the game in the third.
CONNOR COX hit a leadoff single,
LANCE LITTLE followed with an RBI triple, then scored on
MARCO BARRERA's sac fly. Blake Wilhoite responded with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the inning. Tredaway and Brett Smajstrla extended the lead with back-to-back singles in the fourth, combining for three runs, with Tredaway driving in two RBI.
St. Edward's scored the next three runs, pulling within two. Solis grounded out with runners on second and third in the fifth, scoring Little.
DAVID RIPPLE added an RBI single to left field, and
GRAYSON THALLMAN scored on an error.
Angelo State responded with a run in each of the following three innings. Wilhoite hit an RBI single in the sixth, Pendley an RBI double in the seventh, and Flodstrom a sac fly in the eighth.
Cox and Little posted two hits each. Little drove in two RBI and scored twice. Cox had an RBI and two runs.
St. Edward's drops to 28-14 with a 27-13 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host Texas A&M International this weekend in their final regular-season home series.
