Hilltoppers open season with two huge victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team opened up the 2011 campaign with a doubleheader sweep over Newman on Saturday.

Game 1: St. Edward's (2-0, 2-0 HC) offense struck early and often as they scored in every inning in its 8-2 victory. While the bats were hot, Newman (0-5, 0-5) was not, as the Jets tallied four errors that led to 3\three unearned runs. Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) had a 4-for-4 day at the plate which included three runs batted in, three singles, and a huge two-run double to break the game open in the third inning. Six other players reached the hit column with Wes Koenig (Sophomore, Austin, Texas) and Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas) picking up an RBI each.

Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) was dominant on the mound for the Hilltoppers as he registered his first complete game of the year. Over seven innings of work, Rohrbach gave up one earned run on five hits and struck out six Jets. Newman used three pitchers in the first game. Gage Daniels took the loss dropping his season record to 0-2. He finished with 2.2 innings pitched while surrendering five runs (four earned), seven hits, and three walks. Patrick Redlin came on and pitched 1.2 innings giving up two unearned runs on three hits and Jacob Furr finished the game pitching 1.2 innings picking up three strikeouts while giving up an earned run.

Game 2:Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colorado) started for the Hilltoppers and set the tone early as he pitched a perfect first three innings. St. Edward's started early as a Collin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) RBI-single, and an Eric Morgan (Senior, Salt Lake City, Utah) sacrifice fly gave the Hilltoppers an early 2-0 lead.

Bradon Droge would settle down until the fourth inning when the Hilltoppers touched him up for two more runs increasing their lead to 4-0. Johnson handed the ball off to Tim Laine (Senior, Austin, Texas) for the sixth and seventh inning as the crafty senior continued to hold the Jets scoreless.

The Jets drew to within 4-3 during the top of the eighth as Corey Cowan hit a monster three-run homer over the left field fence off of Weslee Schmitz (Freshman, Austin, Texas). Schmitz would be relieved by Dustin Johnson (Senior, Austin, Texas) who put an end to the Jet rally. The Hilltoppers would responded in the bottom half of the inning as clutch two-out hitting from the meat of the St. Edward's order earned them four runs of their own. With the lead at 8-4, Johnson cruised in the bottom half of the ninth.

The Hilltoppers were led at the dish by Elmore who had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. McCaleb again came up big, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Also Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) had a 2-for-4 ballgame with an RBI and two runs scored.

Stephen Johnson picked up the win, pitching five innings while walking one, and giving up only two hits. Laine gave up just a hit and a walk in his two scoreless innings. Johnson picked up the save in his 1.1 innings of work.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action tomorrow as they play a third game against Newman at Lucian-Hamilton Field. First-pitch is slated for noon.
