Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's offense was only able to register six hits as #6 Southern Arkansas swept a twin-bill from the Hilltoppers Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Muleriders scored four late runs and held on in game one, 4-1. Southern Arkansas scored early and often in the second game to take a 7-0 victory.
Game 1:It was a pitcher's duel through the first five innings with Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) allowing just three hits. The righthander did, however, get in trouble with three walks and three hit batters, but the Hilltopper defense and Rohrbach's clutch pitching kept Southern Arkansas (5-1) off of the scoreboard. The Muleriders' starting pitcher, Brian Dixon (2-0) was equally as tough, as St. Edward's (3-2) was only able to scratch out one hit and a hit-by-pitch through the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jake Astor led off with an infield single. After moving to second on a sacrifice, and then to third base on a fly out, he would come around to score on a soft liner to right field by Trey Buck. With two men on, leadoff hitter Gavan McCauley launched a three-run home run off the net in right field to put the Muleriders ahead, 4-0.
The Hilltoppers would mount a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rylan Patel (Freshman, Colleyville, Texas) reached to lead off the inning on a hit by a pitch.Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) laced a single through the right side to put runners at first and third with nobody out. Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) was unlucky as he lined into a double play. Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) did pick up a two-out RBI, when he drove in Patel with a single to centerfield. St. Edward's got a single by Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) but the inning ended when Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) lined out to the right-center gap.
The Hilltoppers were unable to rally in the seventh inning as Rohrbach (1-1) suffered the loss allowing four runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out three in 5.2 innings pitched.
Dixon gained the victory, allowing one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out four in his complete game.
Game 2:Hilltopper starting pitcher Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colo.) started the game off by striking out the side in the first inning.
McCoy led off the bottom of the first inning for the Hilltoppers with a walk. However, he was caught stealing. Minus a second-inning single by Shank, that was the only baserunner St. Edward's would have for the first five innings against Southern Arkansas starting pitcher, Dan Bream.
Southern Arkansas would put up three runs in the second inning when Adam Boucher singled in two runs and McCauley drove in the other with a sacrifice fly.
The Muleriders would score single runs in both the third and fourth on solo home runs by Logan Williams and McCauley to push the score to 5-0.
Trevor Rogers drove in another run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly and Williams homered once again in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Bream handcuffed the Hilltoppers, allowing just two hits, while walking two and striking out seven in his complete-game shutout.
Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss for St. Edward's, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters in just 3.2 innings of work.
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
