Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team couldn't carry over its momentum from their walk-off victory over #6 Southern Arkansas on Sunday as they dropped a 6-2 decision to #23 Abilene Christian Tuesday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
St. Edward's (4-3) opened the scoring in the third inning when Collin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) doubled down the right field line to led off the inning. Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah) tried to sacrifice Elmore to third but was hit by Abilene Christian pitcher Will Calhoun. Rylan Patel (Freshman, Colleyville, Texas) beat out a bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) followed with a walk to drive in Elmore with the first run of the game. The Hilltoppers then were doubled up as Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) laced a line drive to thirdbaseman Marcus Uechi and he stepped on third to get Harris out. Patel was then picked off by Calhoun to end the inning.
Abilene Christian (5-2) responded in the top of the fourth inning as Peter Goudeau drew a one-out walk. James Roland followed with a home run to right field to take the lead, 2-1. The Wildcats would get two more runners on but Hilltopper relief pitcher Weslee Schmitz (Freshman, Austin, Texas) came on to get Aaron Oliver to fly out and end the threat.
The visitors would pad their lead by one in the eighth inning when Cameron Watten drew a two-out walk. Pinch-runner Bryce Gerhardt stole second and then third. Harris' throw down to third got past Elmore and Gerhardt came into score.
Abilene Christian would tack on three runs in the ninth inning when the Hilltoppers would walk the bases loaded to start the inning. The Wildcats would pick up the three runs on a wild pitch and two hits.
Paul Smith (Junior, Austin, Texas) suffers the loss for St. Edward's, after allowing two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference rival UT-Permian Basin. The doubleheader is set for noon at Rhoden Field.
