Falcons pull away from St. Edward's late, 11-5

Box Score ODESSA, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team dropped the final game of a weekend series versus UT-Permian Basin, 11-5 Saturday afternoon at Rhoden Field. The Hilltopers swept two games versus the Falcons on Friday.

St. Edward's (6-4, 5-1 HC) opened the scoring in the first inning when Dylan Shuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) reached on an infield single. He advanced to second on an error and came around to score on a single by Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas).

UT-Permian Basin (5-9, 3-6 HC) answered in the second inning, scoring two runs off of just one hit. They were helped by three errors by St. Edward's to give them a 2-1 lead.

The Falcons added another run in the third inning, when Travis Wilcox doubled home Jeremy Miller who reached on a one-out single.

The Hilltoppers would tie the score in the fifth inning when Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) tripled home Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas) and then came in to score on a wild pitch to make the score, 3-3.

The Falcons would have the answer once again as they would push across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hilltoppers' defense would fail them again, as all three runs were unearned. The home team would increase its lead to 6-3.

St. Edward's would close the gap in the seventh inning, scoring two runs to make the score, 6-5. Schuch and Mark Thomas (Junior, Moline, Ill.) both picked up RBI-singles.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, UT-Permian Basin broke the game wide open. The Falcons scored five runs on four hits as they would bat around.

Dustin Johnson (Senior, Austin, Texas) would suffer the loss in relief for St. Edward's as he allowed two runs on three hits.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Tuesday when they host Tarleton State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
