Hilltoppers explode for 37 runs in doubleheader sweep of Panhandle State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. - The St. Edward's offense busted out for 37 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Panhandle State Friday afternoon at Aggie Field. The Hilltoppers won 14-3 in the first game and raced to a 23-10 victory in game two.

Game 1: St. Edward's (10-7, 8-3 HC) picked up an unearned run in the first inning and then exploded for four runs off of five hits in the second inning.

Panhandle State (2-15, 0-11 HC) answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Two of the runs for the Aggies were unearned as the Hilltoppers committed two errors.

St. Edward's would blow the game open in the fourth inning with four runs. Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) collected an RBI-single with one out. Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) laced a two-out double to drive in the second run and Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) blasted a two-run home run to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Hilltoppers would put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Rylan Patel (Freshman, Colleyville, Texas) led off the inning with a single and stole second and third before coming into to score on a single by Eric Morgan (Senior, Salt Lake City, Utah). Morgan would also score off of an Aggie error to make the score, 11-3.

St. Edward's would add three more runs in the seventh inning for the final runs of the game.

Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) picked up the victory, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out four batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Elmore led the Hilltoppers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Patel also had a good game, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Game 2: In the second game, St. Edward's set the tone early, putting up seven runs in the first inning. The Hilltoppers pounded out six hits with the big blow coming from Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah) who laced a three-run home run for St. Edward's.

The Hilltoppers would continue to pour it on in the second inning, pushing across five more runs.

After Panhandle State got three runs back in the second and third inning combined, Elmore ripped a three-run home run in the fourth inning to distance the Hilltoppers once again.

The Aggies would bat around in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on six hits. However, St. Edward's retaliated with five runs of its own. Johnson hit his second home run of the day, driving in three runs to help lock up the victory.

Tim Laine (Senior, Austin, Texas) would pick up the victory, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two batters.

Shank had quite a game for St. Edward's, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Harris had five RBI off of his two home runs during the game, while Elmore and Johnson both had four RBI.

The two teams will be back in action Saturday when they play the final game of the three-game series. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Aggie Field.
