Hilltoppers clutch at the plate in 10-0 victory over Concordia

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team scored seven of its 10 runs with two outs on its way to a 10-0 shutout out of cross-town rival Concordia Tuesday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

St. Edward's (12-7) would strike first in the second inning. Wes Koenig (Sophomore, Austin, Texas) reached to lead off the inning on a hit by pitch. After moving to second on a sacrifice by Rylan Patel (Freshman, Colleyville, Texas), Koenig advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score the first run of the game on a single up the middle by Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah).

The Hilltoppers rallied again in the third inning, when Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) led off with a walk. Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) followed that up with an infield single. After each runner moved up a base on a fly out, Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) singled home one run to push the score to 2-0. Koenig then stepped to the plate and tried to surprise Concordia (11-8) with a squeeze bunt but McCoy was gunned down at the plate. Patel would pick the team up by launching a shot over the leftfielder's head to plate Johnson and Koenig to make it 4-0.

St. Edward's kept the heat on in the fourth inning, putting two more runs on the board. Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) and McCoy both had RBI during the inning to up the lead to 6-0.

The Hilltoppers would end the scoring in the fifth inning when Harris singled in a run, Elmore brought in a run on a sacrifice fly, and McCoy drove in two more runs on a double to cap things off.

On the afternoon, McCoy led the Hilltopper offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Harris, Johnson and Shank all had two hits apiece.

The Hilltoppers ran out eight pitchers on the mound. The group only allowed four hits as they racked up eight strikeouts and made the big pitches when needed. They left 10 Concordia baserunners stranded on the afternoon.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference rival Texas A&M-International. The doubleheader is set to begin at noon in Laredo, Texas. The second game can be heard live via the TAMU-International Athletic Website. Saturday's single game will also begin at noon and can also be heard on the Dustdevil Website.
