Hilltoppers drop rubber game against Texas A&M-International

Box Score LAREDO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team fell short against a tough Texas A&M-International team on Saturday as they lost 4-3. Both teams combined for 58 runs on Friday in their doubleheader so St. Edward's (13-9, 10-5 HC) threw out Landon Patterson (Senior, Leander, Texas) to face the Dustdevils (12-13, 10-5 HC) senior Mike McGillivray in hopes of keeping the bats quiet.

Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) gave the Hilltoppers an early 1-0 lead as he drew a walk to lead off the game and scored later on an Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) RBI-groundout.

The Dustdevils capitalized in the bottom half of the first with two runs of their own. A leadoff walk was quickly followed up by a two-run homerun from Chris Collazo, giving the Dustdevils a 2-1 lead. With two outs in the third, Schuch drew another walk and advanced to second on a passed ball.

Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) hit a routine grounder to shortstop, but his hustle caused an overthrow which allowed Schuch to race home on the error, tying the game at 2-2. St. Edward's allowed an unearned run in the fourth inning, but answered back in the seventh thanks to a few great hustle plays from Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas).

After a one out single, McCaleb swiped second base and third base which helped him score on a passed ball, tying the score again at 3-3. Patterson was dominant on the mound for the majority of the game until a two-out passed ball in the bottom of the seventh led to another Dustdevil run.

McGillivray (3-3) stepped up big for the Dustdevils as he pitched a perfect ninth inning and shut the door on the Hilltoppers. Patterson (3-1) pitched well going 8.0 innings allowing five hits while striking out four. McGillivray pitched a complete game giving up just the three runs, on three hits, while striking out 10 Hilltoppers. Schuch failed to get a hit, but led the Hilltoppers with a walk and two runs scored.

St. Edward's will be back in action this Tuesday as they head to Abilene to take on Abilene Christian. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
