Hilltoppers grind out two hard-earned victories against UT-Permian Basin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team used brilliant starting pitching, key defensive plays and some timely hitting to sweep UT-Permian Basin Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers got a three-hit shutout from Stephen Johnson in game one for a 1-0 victory. And Landon Patterson threw eight innings of three-hit ball in game two to lead St. Edward's to a 3-1 triumph.

Game 1: St. Edward's (19-17, 13-7 HC) got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) singled to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas). He moved to third base on a single by Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) and scored on an RBI-single by Daniel Homan (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas). That would be the only run of the game as each starting pitcher held the other team in check.

Hilltopper starting pitcher Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colo.) held UT-Permian Basin (15-22, 10-14 HC) hitless through the first three innings.

In the fourth inning, the Falcons would get Garrett Wolff on with a leadoff walk. Johnson would retire the next two batters before an infield single by Travis Wilcox moved Wolff to second. Austin Wooldridge followed with a single to left field but leftfielder Eric Morgan (Senior, Salt Lake City, Utah) gunned out Wolff trying to score to end the inning. The Falcons would only get one hit the rest of the way.

Johnson (5-4) allowed just three hits, while walking two and striking out six batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Cardenas (3-5) was the hard-luck loser for UT-Permian Basin, allowing one run on seven hits, while walking two and striking out nine batters in 5.2 innings of work.

Game 2: UT-Permian Basin scored its first run of the afternoon in the second inning of game two. Wilcox reached base on a leadoff single. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to second base, Wilcox came in to score on a two-out single by Ryan Giacomini that put the Falcons ahead early, 1-0.

Landon Patterson (Senior, Leander, Texas) would settle down after that, allowing one hit in innings three through eight. The righthander struck out seven batters and only allowing four hits in 8.0 innings of work to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) came up big for the Hilltoppers in the eighth inning. With runners at first and second and two outs, the secondbaseman laced a double to the gap in left field to plate both runners.

Brian Shorkey (Junior, Pearland, Texas) came on in the ninth and got a double play and strikeout to earn his third save of the season.

The two teams will battle again on Saturday in a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
