Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's Hilltoppers battled tooth and nail for 13 innings against the UT-Permian Basin but ultimately lost 4-2.
St. Edward's (19-18, 13-8 HC) scored an early run thanks to Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) and Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas). Schuch drew a walk and stole second base. Shank ripped a single into right that scored the speedy Schuch from second base giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead.
Permian Basin (16-22, 11-13 HC) answered back with two runs in the second inning thanks to a two-out two-run double to take the lead, 2-1. UT-Permian Basin would threaten again in the third inning and forced the Hilltoppers to remove Tyler Harris (Junior, Houston, Texas) for Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas). Rohrbach responded with 7.2 innings of relief while scattering just six hits.
With the Hilltoppers trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, St. Edward's looked to Shank for another clutch hit. With two runners on base and two outs, Shank drove in Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) from second base tying the game at 2-2. Shank, however, was thrown out at second base on the play, leaving Schuch stranded at third to end the inning.
Both teams would go back and forth shutting each other down until the 13 thinning which saw the Falcons take hold of the game. Patrick Scholl (Sophomore, Austin, Texas) struck out the first hitter but walked the next two hitters before being pulled in favor of Matt Anderson (Junior, Houston, Texas). After another runner reached base, the Falcons came up with a bases-loaded bloop single that brought in two runs. The Hilltoppers failed to score in the bottom half of the 13 th, giving the Falcons a 4-2 victory.
Shank ended up going over 3-for-5 with two RBI and McCoy ended up going a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 walks.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action this Tuesday as the head to Tarleton State for a match up with the Texans. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
