Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team dropped a 14-4 decision to #30 Tarleton State Tuesday evening at Cecil Ballow Field.
Tarleton State (30-10) got off to a fast start in the first inning, scoring three runs off of Hilltopper starting pitcher Halden Maynard (Freshman, Brenham, Texas). The Texans led off the inning with a double and a single to plate one run and scored the other two on a wild pitch and a fielding error.
St. Edward's (19-19) would get two runs back in the top of the second when Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) reached on an error to start the inning. Daniel Homann (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas) followed with a single to put two runners on. Both runners would move up a base on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Johnson would then come in to score on a wild pitch. Wes Koenig (Sophomore, Austin, Texas) drove in Homann for the second run of the inning and cut the Texan lead to 3-2.
Tarleton State would answer with two runs in both the second and third innings to push its lead out to 7-2.
The Hilltoppers would score a single run in the fourth inning when Mark Thomas (Junior, Moline, Ill.) picked up a pinch-hit RBI.
The Texans would put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning, but not before Eric Morgan (Senior, Salt Lake City, Utah) launched his third home run of the season to left field in the seventh inning.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's. The three-game series will begin with a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 2 p.m. The final game will be Friday starting at 1 p.m. at V.J. Keefe Stadium. The Rattlers are in first place in the conference standings, while St. Edward's is in second. The Hilltoppers are 6.5 games back with nine games to play.
