Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team dropped a doubleheader to #8 St. Mary's, Thursday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium. St. Edward's rallied for three runs in its final at-bat but gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning to fall in game one, 5-4. The Rattlers also took game two, 9-3.
Game 1: St. Mary's (37-8, 23-3 HC) struck first in the third inning. Hilltopper starting pitcher Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colo.) was cruising along, retiring the first eight hitters. The Rattlers rallied with two outs and banged out four-straight hits to produce three runs.
St. Edward's (19-21, 13-10 HC) got a run back in the fourth inning when Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) led off with a triple to the gap in right field. Daniel Homann (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas) followed with a single to plate Shank and cut the lead to 3-1.
From there, Johnson and Rattler starting pitcher Matt Holland held the other team in check until the seventh inning. Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah) led off with his second infield single of the game. Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas) followed with a single up the middle to chase Holland from the game. Sammy Rivas came on to pitch for St. Mary's and had not allowed a run all year in over 30 innings pitched. After a Hilltopper strikeout, Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) stepped to the plate and ripped a Rivas pitch right back up the middle to plate two runs and tie the game, 3-3. Shank gave the Hilltoppers the lead on a single to left field in the next at-bat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson struck out Ryan Morrow to begin the inning. After a hit by pitch and a walk put two runners, Brian Shorkey (Junior, Pearland, Texas) came on to pitch. A hit batter, a walk and a wild pitch would score two runs for St. Mary's and give the home team the victory.
Game 2: In game two, St. Mary's struck first again scoring a run in the second inning.
St. Edward's would answer in the third inning when Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) reached on a one-out single and came in to score on an RBI-groundout by Shank. The Rattlers would put up two runs in the third, fourth, and sixth inning. The Hilltoppers tried to keep pace, scoring a run in the fourth inning on an RBI-groundout by Mark Thomas (Junior, Moline, Ill.).
Two more runs by St. Mary's in the seventh inning would put the game away and give the sweep to the Rattlers.
The two teams will be back in action Friday for the third and final game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at V. J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
