Hilltoppers drop extra-inning affair to number 8 St. Mary's, 1-0

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team dropped an extra-inning affair against #8 St. Mary's, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the series finale at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Hilltopper starting pitcher Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) matched reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week, Carl O'Neal pitch-for-pitch through nine innings. O'Neal did not allow a hit until the 10th inning. Rohrbach allowed eight hits but no more than one in an inning as he stranded seven baserunners.

St. Edward's (19-22, 13-11 HC) finally got to O'Neal in the 10th inning, when Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) led off the inning with a double to right field. That would chase O'Neal from the game and the Rattlers brought in closer Sammy Rivas. Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah) would sacrifice Johnson to third base, which brought the Rattler infield in. Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas) hit a ground ball that was caught by the Rattler shortstop and Johnson was gunned down at the plate on a close play at the plate for out number two. McCaleb would then steal second base but was stranded there.

St. Mary's (38-8, 24-3 HC) would get a one-out double by Esteban Raygoza. After Billy Richard reached on a fielding error, Tyler Harris (Junior, Houston, Texas) came on to relieve Rohrbach. A wild pitch and a walk would load the bases, and Jason Garcia drew a walk to bring in the winning run.

St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host Panhandle State for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers swept the Aggies in Goodwell, Okla. earlier in the season.
