Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team allowed seven runs in the final two innings to fall to UT-Permian Basin, 10-5, in the first round of the Heartland Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
UT-Permian Basin (25-25) put up a single run in each of the first three innings.
St. Edward's (25-23) got two of the runs back in the bottom of the first inning when both Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) and Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) drew one-out walks. They would move up a base on a wild pitch. Schuch scored on a single by Daniel Homann (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas). Shank would later come in on a groundout by Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas).
In the second inning, Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas) laced a two-out single and then stole second. He was brought in by a double by Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas).
The Hilltoppers would take the lead in the fourth inning when McCoy snuck a bunt single in on the Falcons to score Joe Pirozzolo (Sophomore, The Woodlands, Texas). They would add to the lead in the seventh inning on a Homann RBI-single.
Then came the eighth inning. With the Hilltoppers holding a 5-3 lead, Austin Wooldridge hit a one-out home run. The Falcons would follow with four more hits and before they knew it, St. Edward's was trailing 7-5. UT-Permian Basin would add three unearned runs in the ninth inning as the Hilltoppers made three errors for the final score, 10-5.
Matthew Anderson (Junior, Houston, Texas) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits, while walking three and striking out five in 5.0 innings of work.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday for the second day of the Heartland Conference Tournament. They will play at Noon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium and the opponent has yet to be determined, as they will take on the loser of the other first round game between St. Mary's and Texas A&M-International.
