Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team won two elimination games on Friday to advance to the championship game of the Heartland Conference Tournament. The Hilltoppers defeated Texas A&M-International, 12-1, and avenged an early loss in the tournament with a 6-2 win over UT-Permian Basin.
Game 1
St. Edward's (27-23) jumped out early on TAMU-International (19-33) in the first inning. Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas) drew a one-out walk followed by a single from Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas). Daniel Homann (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas) would also single to score Schuch. Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) had the big blow with a three-run home run to right field. Joe Pirozzolo (Sophomore, The Woodlands, Texas) added a single and Kyle Harris (Junior, Layton, Utah) launched a two-run home run to left field for a 6-0 lead.
That is all that Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) would need as he threw a complete-game six-hitter. He allowed one run, while walking one and striking out seven. In 9.0 innings.
Paul McCoy (Senior, Killeen, Texas), Shank and Homann each had three hits for the Hilltoppers.
Game 2
In game two both pitchers had it working early as neither team scored in the first three innings.
In the fourth inning, St. Edward's struck first, scoring twice. Will McCaleb (Junior, Houston, Texas) drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Schuch would get the second RBI on a single to left field.
Both teams would score a run in the fifth inning before the Hilltoppers put the game away with an eighth inning when Harris doubled in a run and Johnson had a two-run double.
Landon Patterson (Senior, Leander, Texas) went the distance, allowing two runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out four in 9.0 innings of work.
St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday when they take on St. Mary's in the championship game Saturday at Noon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium and the opponent has yet to be determined, as they will take on the loser of the other first round game between St. Mary's and Texas A&M-International.
