#3 St. Edward’s bested by Heartland-rival Dallas Baptist, 2-1

DALLAS, Texas – The third-ranked St. Edward's women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season on Monday, falling to Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist, 2-1 at Patriot Field. The loss stopped the St. Edward's season-opening nine-match winning streak, which was the best start in school history. It also put the two teams in a tie atop the Heartland Conference standings.
 
It was St. Edward's (9-1, 3-1 HC) who got the first scoring chance, just 50 seconds into the match as they gained a cornerkick, however they were not able to get off a shot.
 
Dallas Baptist (9-2, 3-1 HC) countered by putting pressure on the Hilltopper defense with four shots over the next 20 minutes of action. Danielle Presley registered three of those shots, with the final one finding its mark in the 22nd minute. Mia Romo tallied the assist that put the Hilltoppers in 1-0 hole.
 
The Hilltoppers would try and find the equalizer in the first half but would come up empty after a cornerkick, followed by a shot by ARI GARCIA was saved by the Patriot keeper.
 
In the second half, both teams would have their chances early on but neither was able to capitalize as the score stayed 1-0, in favor of the Patriots.
 
Finally in the 72nd minute, St. Edward's would find the back of the net. Freshman LAUREN HELLER continued her scoring ways, notching her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a header. She now has scored in three-straight matches and in seven of the 10 matches this season. MIKAYLA ENGEL would pick up her first assist of the season on the play.
 
MEGAN ANDERSON would come in for Heller after the goal and immediately rattled off a shot that was blocked. The Patriots would counter with a scoring opportunity that was good. Ashley Cox would give the lead back to Dallas Baptist in the 74th minute on an assist from Lindsey Eccles.
 
St. Edward's came right back and almost tied again. In the 75th minute a shot by TAYLOR SETTECERRI hit the post. The Hilltoppers would have three more shots down the stretch but couldn't knot the score as the Patriots went on to win the match.
 
Dallas Baptist would outshoot the Hilltoppers, 9-8.
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference rival, St. Mary's in the “Battle of the Saints”. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas. Live coverage will be available on the Rattler Athletic Website.
