ABILENE, Texas – The #8 St. Edward's women's soccer team used three first-half goals to defeat McMurry 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers earned their fourth consecutive shutout to improve to 15-1 on the year.
St. Edward's wasted little time to notch the first goal of the game. In the fourth minute,
RACHEL MURRAY put in a header from inside the box off a cross from
VALENCIA MOBLEY. The goal was Murray's team leading 13
th goal of the year. The Hilltoppers struck again just four minutes later when
MIKAYLA ENGEL beat McMurry's goalkeeper Chanel Felder off an assist by
JESSICA TRAVES to make the score 2-0. This was Engel's 11
th goal of the year. In the 28
th minute,
KELLY DAVIS scored off a pass from
AMANDA TABONE to give St. Edward's a 3-0 lead. The half would end with the same score.
Shortly into the second half, McMurry would make a change at goalkeeper by bringing in Shelby to replace Felder Sova, and would make three saves and hold the Hilltoppers without a goal in the second half.
In the second half, neither team was able to register a goal, as both defenses locked down the game, allowing just four total shots on goal in the contest. Despite playing a tough contest, the War Hawks found themselves on the losing end of a 3-0 decision.
St. Edward's would outshoot McMurry 15-2 in the match. Hilltoppers goalkeeper Daniel Licarione made one save and earned her 10
th shutout of the year.
“Today we concentrated on getting off to a quick start and we were up 2-0 within eight minutes,” said head coach
Nick Cowell. “The team was excited about putting away their chances at the start of the game after the early frustrations in the previous game. This team is young, hungry and willing to fight for each other on the field. We have excellent leadership from the older players and a strong team chemistry among the various classes.”
St. Edward's will be back in action on Thursday when they host St. Mary's in another session of the Battle of the Saints. Action will begin at 1:00.
