Hilltoppers split with Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team split a double header with Newman Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action at Lucian-Hamilton Field. St. Edward's won the opening game, 4-1, before falling to the Jets, 3-1, in game two.

Game 1
Newman (1-4) would strike first in the top of the first inning. David Longmore had a one-out RBI-single scoring Terrell Brown. It would be the only tally of the game for the Jets.

The Hilltoppers (2-3) tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UTSA) led off by reaching on an error by Jets' third baseman Tyler Hancock. Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) reached on a bunt single and Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) sacrificed both runners over. Will McCaleb (Houston, Texas/Blinn JC) drove home LaLonde with a ground out to shortstop.

St. Edwards blew open the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC), Daniel Homann (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and LaLonde all singled. LaLonde's single drove in Shank with what would eventually be the winning run. Both Homann and LaLonde scored on McCaleb's two-out single to center. Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) got his second win of the season and his first shutout, throwing all seven innings, allowing one earned run, five hits, walking two and striking out five. Kyle Burkhardt took the loss for the Jets.

Game 2

The Hilltopper bats went almost silent in game two as they could not solve Jet starting pitcher Brandon Droge. The Newman pitcher held St. Edward's to just one run off of three hits in 8.1 innings of work. He would walk four but strike out seven batters. Newman would get all of the runs they needed in the third inning as they pushed across three runs. St. Edward's chipped away at the lead with a run in the third inning. Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) drew a two-out walk and advanced to third base on a single to right field by Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC). He then scored on a wild pitch. The Hilltoppers would only get two hits from there on as the Jets salvaged a split.

The Hilltoppers and Jets will be back in action Sunday for a single game to begin at Noon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Live audio, video, and stats will all be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
