Defensive miscues costly in Hilltopper 2-0 loss to Newman

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – Three Hilltopper errors led to two unearned runs as St. Edward's dropped the rubber match against Newman, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. St. Edward's (2-4, 2-3 HC) threatened to score in the first inning when AJ Hermanson (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) led off with a bunt single.

He moved to third base after a sacrifice and a groundout. Daniel Homann (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) walked to place runners at first and third, however, Homann was caught stealing on an unsuccessful double steal. Hilltopper starting pitcher Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) started strong, allowing just one hit through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, St. Edward's made two errors allowing two Newman (2-4, 2-4 HC) baserunners to score. From there, St. Edward's could not respond as they were only able to scratch out single hits in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Rohrbach (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, while striking out five batters in 6.1 innings of work. Jacob Furr (1-1) got the victory, allowing no runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out four batters in 7.0 innings of work.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Incarnate Word. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field. Live audio and stats will be available on the Incarnate Word Website.
