Box Score 2 ODESSA, Texas – Two home runs by Wes Koenig and two brilliant pitching performances led the St. Edward's baseball team sweep doubleheader against UT-Permian Basin at Roden Field. The Hilltoppers won the first game 4-2, and took the second game 8-1.
Game 1
In game one, St. Edward's (6-4, 4-3 HC) got on the board first in the third inning when Joe Pirozzolo (The Woodlands, Texas/College Park HS) scored on a throwing error and failed pickoff attempt by the Falcon starting pitcher. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) would add another run to the Hilltopper lead in the fourth inning by launching a homerun down the right field line, making the score 2-0.
St. Edward's would score two runs in the sixth inning when Koenig hammered out his second homerun of the game down the right field line, brining in Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC). UT-Permian Basin (1-10, 1-7 HC) would not allow a shutout and would score two runs in the seventh.
With bases loaded, the Hilltoppers would walk two Falcon players allowing the Falcons to collect two runs. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) came in to shut the door, picking up his second save of the season. Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) picked up his third-straight victory, allowing no runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out five batters in 6.0 innings of work.
Game 2
St. Edwards would take an early lead in the second game, collecting two runs in the first inning when Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) singled to first, followed by a single from Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto College) allowing Bobrowski to advance to third.
Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) brought in Bobrowski off of a single down the right field line. Shank was brought home by Koenig when he singled to the gap in left field, making the score 2-0. The Falcons would score their only run of game two in the fourth inning when Arturo Carrera singled to left center filed allowing Hugo Hernandez, who was on second, to advance and score.
This hit cut the Hilltopper lead to 2-1. The Hilltoppers would follow by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Bobrowski and Shank were both walked. LaLonde then followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance both men on base. Bobrowski would then score on a passed ball as Shank advanced to third. Burford then brought Shank home by hitting a single to second base. Pirozzolo would then collect his first RBI of the game by hitting a double down the right field line, allowing Burford to score. The Hilltopper lead increased to, 5-1. T
he Hilltoppers collected another run in the sixth as Shank hit a single and then advanced to second on the throw; collect an RBI as Bobrowski scored. St. Edward's would collect the last two runs of the game in the eighth when Will McCaleb (Houston, Texas/Blinn JC) scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, LaLonde was hit by the pitch bringing in Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC). The Hilltoppers would complete the sweep with an 8-1 lead. For the day, Koenig who collected two homeruns and four RBI to lead St. Edward's.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday as they take on UT-Permian Basin in Odessa for a third game that will kick off at 12:00p.m.
